Bring Your Mice Christmas Card to Life with this step-by-step tutorial.
Creating a Mice Christmas Card involves combining festive details with creative techniques. You can craft a night sky background and colour adorable characters. You might want to try new distress ink techniques. Perhaps, you wish to create a whimsical card for someone special. This guide will walk you through each step. Gather your materials, and let’s get started!
Step 1: Preparing the Mistletoe Mice Digital Stamp
Before beginning your Mice Christmas Card, the first step is to print the Mistletoe Mice digital stamp. I adjusted the height of the stamp to approximately 7 centimetres. This size works perfectly with the background panel we will create later.
For the best colouring results, I recommend printing the stamp on DCP paper. Its smooth surface is ideal for alcohol markers, ensuring vibrant and even coverage.
After printing, I roughly cut out the stamp. This helps me decide where to place the moon in the night sky background. The scene gets a balanced and magical look.
With the placement in mind, the next step is to craft the background before colouring the stamp. Next, let’s move on to creating the night sky with a moon.
Step 2: Crafting the Magical Night Sky Background
Creating the night sky background is one of my favourite parts of this project. For this card, I drew inspiration from a YouTube video by Nicole Spohr, where she crafted a similar background. While I adapted her techniques to suit my supplies and style, her tutorial helped bring this background to life. Let’s walk through each step to build a soft, glowing sky and moon for your Mice Christmas Card.
Preparing the Background Panel
Start by die-cutting a rectangular panel with a double-stitched border from smooth white cardstock. Smooth cardstock is essential for achieving seamless ink blending. This panel will serve as the base of your night sky.
Creating a Custom Moon Mask
Since I didn’t have a pre-made stencil or mask, I created one myself. I used a circle die and acetate to die-cut a circle that will serve as my moon mask. This DIY approach ensures the perfect size and placement for your design.
Next, secure your panel with low-tack tape to prevent it from shifting during inking. Place the printed Mistletoe Mice stamp on the panel. Decide where the moon will go. Typically, it is in the upper-right corner of this design. Once you’re satisfied with the placement, tape the acetate mask in place. This step ensures everything stays aligned as you blend your inks.
Blending the Night Sky
Once the mask is in place, add ink around the moon to create a soft glow:
- Start with Tumbled Glass Distress Ink just around the edges of the mask to create a bright halo effect.
- Blend Salty Ocean Ink over the entire panel to create a base layer. Starting with a light layer of ink makes blending darker colours easier.
- To ground the scene, add a strip of Pine Needles Distress Ink at the bottom of the panel. This mimics grass and provides a foundation for the mice.

Now, build the sky:
- Add Villainous Potion Distress Oxide near the horizon and along the left side for depth. Or depth.
- Layer Chipped Sapphire over the purple tones to achieve a deeper blue-purple hue.
- Use Salty Ocean to blend toward the moon, keeping the area around it lighter for contrast.
- Finish with Black Soot along the outer edges to darken the corners and enhance the depth of the scene.
Blend each transition thoroughly to avoid harsh lines. Repeat the layers as needed until you’re happy with the smoothness and richness of the colours.
Adding Moon Details
Once the sky is done, remove the moon mask. Use Tumbled Glass Distress Ink to lightly add colour to the moon, leaving the edges white for a glowing effect. For texture, use coloured pencils in blue and purple to draw soft craters and shadows. Blend these gently to mimic the natural look of the moon’s surface.
Creating Stars and Snow
Finish the background by adding white splatters to create stars and snowflakes:
- Dilute white acrylic paint with water.
- Use a brush to splatter the paint over the panel by tapping the brush handle.
- Reapply the moon mask to avoid getting paint on the moon. Reapply the moon mask to avoid paint on the moon.

Let everything dry thoroughly before moving on. This layered background, with its soft glow and vibrant colours, sets the perfect stage for your adorable Mistletoe Mice!
Step 3: Colouring the Mistletoe Mice Stamp
While the night sky background dries, it’s the perfect time to colour the Mistletoe Mice digital stamp. Using alcohol markers, you can bring these adorable mice to life with rich tones and soft highlights. Below, I’ll guide you through my colouring process and share the colour combinations I used.
Choosing Colour Combinations
For this card, I used Twin Markers from Decotimecrafts. Here are the combinations I selected:
- Mice Fur: Pale Cream (142), Brown Grey (104), Walnut (100), Clay (116).
- Inner Ears: Salmon Pink (25), Flesh (139), Blush (136).
- Headband (Large Mouse): Pale Lilac (147), Neon Violet (148), Deep Violet (81).
- Headband (Small Mouse): Baby Boy (144), Midi Sky (190), Dark Sky (190).
- Scarf (Large Mouse): Pastel Pink (17), Pale Pink (09), Rose Pink (08).
- Scarf (Small Mouse): Yellow Green (48), Grass Green (47), Forest Green (50).
- Pom-poms: Cool Grey 3, Cool Grey 1.
- Mistletoe Leaves: Forest Green (50), Grass Green (47), Yellow Green (48).
- Mistletoe Berries: Wine Red (01).
These combinations help create contrast and enhance the playful details in the image.
Tips for Adding Depth and Dimension
When colouring the mice, layer your markers to add depth. Start with the lightest colour. Gradually add darker shades to areas where shadows naturally fall. Focus on places under their scarves or around their legs. For smoother blending, work in small sections and go over the transitions with the lighter marker again.
Use a white gel pen to highlight the mice’s features by adding small dots on their cheeks.
Preparing the Cut-Out
Once the stamp is coloured, carefully cut it out with scissors. Leave a slight white border around intricate areas, like the mistletoe. These parts might be too delicate to trim perfectly. This border will blend seamlessly when assembling the card.

These vibrant mice are now ready to shine against the night sky background. Next, we’ll bring everything together to finish the card!
Step 4: Assembling the Card
Now it’s time to bring all the elements together and to finish your Mice Christmas Card. Here’s how I built the scene, from creating the layered background to adding the final details.
Creating the Background Layers
To add texture and dimension, I die-cut branches using two different branch dies from dark brown cardstock. I shaded the edges with Distress Ink in Black Soot, applied with a finger dauber, to enhance the details. This subtle touch creates a more realistic effect and makes the branches stand out against the night sky background.
Next, I adhered the branches to the card. Two branches frame the sides of the scene, while another branch holds the mistletoe. I used liquid glue for a secure bond. I carefully positioned the branches. This ensured the mistletoe could hang naturally without obscuring other elements.
Adding the Sentiment
Initially, I planned to emboss the message “Merry Christmas” directly onto the background. However, the white embossing powder appeared silver against the dark ink, making it difficult to read.
To resolve this, I chose a pre-printed sentiment, “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” from an older Decotimecrafts paper pad. Its colour matched the design perfectly, and the phrase fit the card’s cosy, wintry feel.
I glued the sentiment directly onto the background, covering the embossed mistake entirely. Once it was in place, I began building the rest of the scene around it.
Completing the Scene
With the sentiment in place, I adhered the two mice to the background using foam tape. This added dimension and made the characters pop against the night sky.
Positioning the mistletoe required some planning to make sure it hung just above the smaller mouse while complementing the sentiment. I glued it securely to the branch for a seamless look.
I used alcohol markers to blend the white edges of the mistletoe and mice cut-outs with the background. The colors I chose were Ultra Marine and Dark Sky. I used Dark Sky for the blue areas and Ultra Marine to match the purple-toned shadows.
Layering these colours made the elements blend naturally into the scene.
Final Touches
Once the scene was finished, I attached the entire background to a 10.5 x 14.8 cm white card base using liquid glue.
To tie the design together, I paired the card with a blue envelope that complements the colour scheme.

And just like that, the Mice Christmas Card is ready to send!
Techniques to Enhance Your Card
Creating a charming Christmas card is all about adding depth and mood to your design. Here are some techniques that will elevate your cards and allow you to experiment with various creative effects.
Night Sky Techniques
Blending Distress Inks is an excellent way to create a beautiful night sky for your cards. The key is to layer the inks. Start with lighter shades. Gradually build up to darker tones for more depth. For this card, I used Chipped Sapphire, Black Soot, and Salty Ocean. This mix gives the night sky a rich, dark atmosphere.
For a smooth blend, use a light touch and circular motions to merge the colours seamlessly. This technique creates a soft, glowing effect, perfect for a winter scene.
Creating Unique Backgrounds
Don’t hesitate to experiment with different techniques for your night sky designs. You can add texture to the background using crafting mousse or embossing powder. Another idea is to apply water droplets on the inked background to create a speckled, misty look. These creative techniques can enhance your Christmas card. They can also add interest to any other scene you’re working on.
Mixing Media
Combining alcohol markers, Distress Inks, and acrylic paint can give your cards a personalized touch and enhance their visual appeal. Alcohol markers are great for colouring your stamped images with vivid, clean lines. Distress Inks can create rich backgrounds and shading.
Adding small details with white acrylic paint or gel pens, like snowflakes or highlights, ties the entire design together. The mixture of these media lets you achieve a textured, layered effect that is both eye-catching and unique.
Question
What other scenes could you create using the night sky technique? Consider a snowy winter landscape, a galaxy background filled with stars, or even a magical forest scene beneath the stars. I’d love to hear your ideas and see what you create!
