Crafting Supplies – Measurements for the Pop-Up Beach card Base
Let’s gather the materials needed for our pop-up beach map. Here’s a list of the different sizes you’ll need:
- White DCP Paper (Sky): 10 cm (width) x 6.5 cm (height) / 3.94 inches (width) x 2.56 inches (height)
- White DCP Paper (Base); 30 cm (height) x 10,5 cm (width) /11.81 inches (height) x 4.13 inches (width).
- Brown Paper (Bottom Layer of Beach Scene): 10 cm (width) x 9.5 cm (height) / 3.94 inches (width) x 3.74 inches (height)
- Brown Paper (Middle Layer of Beach Scene): 10 cm (width) x 7.5 cm (height) / 3.94 inches (width) x 2.95 inches (height)
- Brown Paper (Top Layer of Beach Scene): 10 cm (width) x 4 cm (height) / 3.94 inches (width) x 1.57 inches (height)
- Blue Paper (Waves): 10 cm (width) x 7 cm (height) / 3.94 inches (width) x 2.76 inches (height)
- Brown Paper Strips for Pop-Up Cubes: 2 inches (width) x 10 cm (length) / 0.79 inches (width) x 3.94 inches (length)
With these dimensions in hand, we are all set to build our pop-up base and put a three-dimensional spin on our sunny beach scene.
Crafting the Pop-Up Base – Bringing the Beach Scene to Life
Let’s dive into the creative process of making our pop-up beach map! In this section, we cover how to create the various elements that bring our sunny beach scene to life, including the white base of the card, the pop-up cubes and the waves and beach elements.
Step 1. Creating the White Card Base
- Take a piece of white DCP paper measuring 30 cm (width) x 10.5 cm (height) / 11.81 inches (width) x 4.13 inches (height).
- Score the white paper at 15 cm (centimetres) / 5.91 inches (inches) to create a fold, forming the base of our beach scene.
Step 2. Crafting the Background
- For the sky background, use white DCP paper measuring 10 cm (width) x 6.5 cm (height).
- Use a cloud stencil and blue ink to add fluffy white clouds to the sky, adding a touch of whimsy to the scene.
- For the sandy beach background, take 10cm (width) x 9.5cm (height) brown paper and 10cm (width) x 4cm (height) paper. I punched this paper with a hill punch, so you get the shapes of the beach hills.
- Create the sandy texture by inking the paper with shades of brown, which adds depth and dimension. To give it a bit more texture, I apply splatters of brown metallic ink.
- Stick these parts onto the upright part of the pop-up card. You start at the top, stuck in the clouds. Then, the smallest piece of sand beach, brown paper, and partly over that, the largest piece of sand beach.
Step 3. Crafting the Waves and Beach Elements
- Grab your brown paper measuring 10 cm (width) x 9.5 cm (height) / 3.94 inches (width) x 3.74 inches (height). This paper meets the fold line on the flat part of the pop-up card. Before sticking it on, I worked the paper with brown ink and splashes of brown metallic paint. Stick it onto your base card
- Using a die to make waves, die-cut waves out of blue paper. Make this in a size of 10 cm (width) x 7 cm (height) / 3.94 inches (width) x 2.76 inches (height).
- Add ink to the edges of the blue paper to give the water extra texture. Add splatters with blue metallic ink.
- Add the waves to the front of the base to give the illusion of a serene coastline. The water falls over the beach. To give the coastline extra texture, I added deco snow on the top of the waves.
Step 4. Crafting the Cubes with Sand Elements
- To start, use strips of brown paper measuring 2 inches (width) x 10 cm (length) to make the cubes.
- Score each strip at 0.5 inch, 1 inch and 1.5 inches, respectively. 1 cm, 2 cm and 3 cm.
- Fold the strips in half and apply glue to one side of the fold. The opening of the cube should face the raised edge. Attach the strip with glue on top of the beach part of the base. Then, also apply glue to the top of the cube on the side of the fold line. Fold the card closed to attach the cube to the back of the card.
- I used the hill punch to punch two more small pieces of beach hills. I worked these too with ink and metallic paint. Stick these pieces of beach upright against the cube to enhance the 3d effect of the hills.
With our waves, beach elements, cubes decorated with sandy pieces and the charming background in place, the beach scene on our pop-up card really comes to life! Let’s continue adding colour, texture and cheerful details to make this summer creation an unforgettable keepsake for the person who receives it.
Step 5 Colouring the Pineapple Floatie – Bringing the Scene to Life
Let’s add some vibrant colours to our beach scene! I coloured the digital stamp “Pineapple Floatie” with my trusty Twinmarkers (alcohol markers).
Here are the colour combinations I used for each element:
- Skin: Barely Beige (29), Salmon Pink (25), Peachy Blush (259) and Tanned Skin (260).
- Hair: Caramel (253), Brown Grey (104), Walnut (100) and Clay (116).
- Floatie, bikini and bows: Pastel Lemon (39), Lemon Yellow (35), Dark Yellow (31) and Pale Yellow (38).
- Leaves: Grass Green (47), Grass Green (47), Forest Green (50) and Dark Green (51).
- Bucket and shovel: Baby Boy (144), Sky Blue (76) and Midi sky (190).
- Bird: Cool Grey (CG4), Cool Grey 1 (CG1) and colourless blender (0).

Step 6. Crafting Beach Elements – Adding Playful Details
As we continue our creative journey, let’s add some delightful beach elements to our pop-up card, bringing even more playfulness to the scene!
Beach umbrella
To create a beach feel, I die-cut a charming beach umbrella from two colours of yellow paper. I worked the edges a little with yellow ink. I punched the pole of the beach umbrella out of black paper.
Seashells and starfish
Using a seashell and starfish punch, I made these from different shades of cream and beige paper.
Glueing them onto the sandy beach background gives our card a touch of coastal magic.
Tropical palm trees
For an exotic touch, I die-cut the leaves for the palm trees from two colours of green paper. for the trunk, I used the same colour paper I used for the beach.
These palm trees add paradise to our pop-up beach scene.
Step 7. Personalising the Message – Sunny Smiles and Beachy Vibes
Using the alphabet die set, I carefully created the sentiment “Sunny Smiles, Beachy Vibes!” with the clean white letters.
By placing the sentiment amid the vibrant waves and beach elements, you add a striking contrast and draw attention to the heartfelt message.
“Sunny Smiles, Beachy Vibes!” conveys the wonderful feeling of a summer beach day.
The white letters against the colourful ocean background evoke the image of shimmering sea foam and enhance the beach-like atmosphere.
Step 8. Adding Dimension – The Finishing Touches
Now that our beautiful beach elements are ready, it’s time to add dimension and vibrancy to our pop-up map. Let’s bring our beach scene to life with the final details!
With the beach umbrella, shells, starfish and tropical palm trees at hand, it’s time to arrange them on the sandy beach background.
Glueing the elements in place adds depth and texture, giving our pop-up beach scene a magical coastal feel.
Paper glaze and highlights:
Applying paper glaze to the floats gives them a glossy, realistic look as if they are ready to float on the waves.

During this blog post, I hope you felt the warm summer and the joy of bringing a beach scene to life. Making a pop-up beach card with the digital stamp “Pineapple Floatie” has been a wonderful journey, and I hope you, too, will embark on your own creative adventure.
