Bringing Your Autumn Birthday Card to Life

Making an autumn-inspired card with warm colours and cosy textures feels rewarding.

Let’s go through each step together to create this lovely card. Using materials from Polkadoodles along with a few essential supplies, you’ll layer, stamp, and arrange the details to capture the spirit of the season.

Let’s start by colouring the main design, move on to building the card base, and finalize the look with unique touches.

Step 1: Stamping and Colouring the Digital Design

Begin by printing the Hot Chocolate Cup Macaron Coffee Autumn Fall Fox digital stamp, which will serve as the central theme of your card. I printed mine at 8.5 cm in height on DCP paper, which is ideal for alcohol markers. If you’re using different colouring media, try alternative paper.

Colouring Your Image

I coloured the image with alcohol markers. These are the colour combinations I used:

  • Fox: Carrot Orange, Orange, Rose Beige, Burnt Sienna
  • Light Fur: Leather, Colourless Blender
  • Cup: Cardinal, English Red, Burgundy
  • Macarons, Scarf, Hat: Aqua Mint, Cool Mint, Teal Blue
  • Fur: Cool Grey 4, Cool Grey 3, Cool Grey 1
  • Paws: Burnt Sienna
  • Macaron Cream: Pale Cream

The hot chocolate cup is painted in deep reds, adorned with small white dots for detail. The macarons and scarf feature bright aqua and mint colours, adding a fun touch. The background is a simple white to emphasize the vibrant colours of the illustration.

Add highlights with a white gel pen to bring dimension to the fox, scarf, and cup:

  • Add small white dots on the cup for detail.
  • Draw crosshatch patterns on the scarf for texture.

Once you’ve finished colouring, carefully cut out the image. Now you’re ready to build your card base.

Step 2: Constructing the Card Base and Adding Layers

Let’s get started on the card base and layers.

Creating the card base

Use a white card base measuring 10.5 x 14.8 cm. To make one, cut white cardstock to 21 x 14.8 cm, score at 10.5 cm, and fold.

Creating the layers

  • First Layer: Cut brown cardstock to 10 x 14.3 cm. This adds a rich contrast to the base.
  • Patterned Paper Layer: Choose the blue patterned paper from Autumn Fall Paper Pattern 2 featuring hearts and autumn leaves. Cut this layer to 9.5 x 13.8 cm and adhere to the brown layer, then attach both to the card base.

With the basics ready, let’s create the background for our digital stamp.

Step 3: Building the Background for our fox

Add depth to your card by creating a layered background for the fox.

  1. Main Rectangle Panel: Use a stitched-edge rectangle die to cut a white rectangle measuring 7.9 x 11.8 cm.
  2. Brown Layer: Cut brown cardstock to 8.4 x 12.3 cm and attach the white rectangle to this brown piece.
  3. Accent Layer: For extra texture, use the orange patterned paper with white-outlined leaves. Cut it to 7.9 x 4 cm and position it horizontally across the white rectangle, roughly centred.

This layered panel will create a beautiful background for the fox and add visual interest.

The rich textures of the layered papers contrast beautifully with the detailed colouring of the fox and its accessories. Highlights and details, such as white gel pen accents on the cup and scarf, add dimension, making the design pop against the card’s warm autumn colours.

Step 4: Adding the Sentiment and Finalising Your Card

Let’s make this card even more special by adding a birthday sentiment and finishing those final touches.

Choosing and Preparing the Sentiment

From the Autumn Fall Greetings set, I chose “Happy Birthday You Foxy Thing.” Print and carefully cut the words individually: “Happy,” “Birthday,” and “You Foxy Thing” for flexible placement.

Arranging the Elements

  • Place the fox image on the panel to guide the sentiment layout.
  • Place “Happy” in the top-left and “Birthday” in the top-right, just above the fox’s hat. Position “You Foxy Thing” below the image.

Securing the Fox

Add support strips behind the fox, especially where it overlaps the orange strip, to ensure the image sits evenly. Attach it securely.

The card features a playful arrangement of a fox in a hot chocolate cup, surrounded by autumn-themed elements like leaves and macarons. The layers include a light blue patterned paper with hearts, a rich brown cardstock layer, and a white rectangle die-cut panel that adds dimension. The card has a cheerful and inviting autumn aesthetic.

Your autumn birthday card is now complete, filled with layers, textures, and warm seasonal colours!
